College players wearing #0 because of Gilbert

Lee Jenkins has written an article entitled Arenas an agent for zero’s popular growth where he discusses how Gilbert’s #0 is now a trendy selection in U.S. college ranks. Some interesting tidbits from the article:

  • At least 20 tournament teams have had a player in the program this season with jersey No. 0 or No. 00.
  • What Michael Jordan did for No. 23, Gilbert Arenas has done for No. 0.
  • “You go with the zero when you’ve been through something and you are looking to get a new beginning. It helps you get going again. It helps you get the swag back.” – Russell Westbrook, UCLA
  • “No matter who you are, wearing the number means something. It means that you’ve got to be more than a zero.” – Aaron Brooks, Oregon Ducks
  • “The zero is a powerful statement. It is for anybody who feels unappreciated or feels like somebody is telling them that they are worth nothing.” – Gilbert Arenas

I’m as big a Gilbert fan as the next guy, but this comparison is simply INCORRECT:

“What Michael Jordan did for No. 23, Gilbert Arenas has done for No. 0″

There’s no comparing what Michael Jordan did for #23 to what Gilbert appears to be doing for the #0. Back when Jordan was in his prime, kids would literally fight for the right to wear #23 for their high school or AAU basketball teams. This is because Jordan was so great that when you wore his number, you felt like you automatically became a better player, even if you were the biggest scrub on the team. You just felt different with that number on.

Maybe that statement should say “What Michael Jordan did for No. 23, Gilbert Arenas may eventually do for No. 0″
