As reported on the Washington Post and Washington Times, Gilbert Arenas will opt out of his contract after next season and become a free agent during the summer of 2008.
On his decision to opt out:
“To me, it’s just a smarter business decision to play next season, opt out and then be able to sign a long-term deal that is going to keep me in one place”
On his intentions:
“I’m not opting out to leave. I’m opting out to sign.”
“I’m not looking at anything else. It’s just business. If something happens where they don’t want me or they’re going in a different direction, I can look elsewhere. But my intentions are not to leave.”
On signing with an agent:
“I don’t need an agent. I can do all of this research myself.”
Arenas would be eligible to sign a maximum contract covering six years and worth between $90 and $100 while other teams could only sign him to a five year contract.

I pray to the sweet Lord that Abe “the backstabber” Polin actually gives that fool a one hundred million dollar contract and saddles the Wizards with six more years of no passing, no leadership and no defense. That moron isn’t even a team captain.

Listen spurs fan, I must say that I love the Duncan, Finley, Parker combination as much as the next guy and hope they cream “King James” in the finals, but nobody insults my Gil. The man has an air to him that no other superstar can. The fact that he can tell the truth at any press conference, give away his jersey every home game, and create his own charity foundation for kids, just in his first year of being a real star…well that’s something unique. As for his playing, he’s great overall and even greater with the wizards. If you think he was hogging the ball then please explain how Caron was totally kicking this season, and how they completely fell; apart AS A TEAM when Gil was injured.

First of all, Caron is a great player without Gilbert’s greed. The team went in a tailspin during the games when he and Antawn were out, long before Gil got hurt. Gilbert is already making more than 10 million per year and the word is that he rejected a three year extension just recently that would have given him even more money. He’s just not worth it. He’s already paid more than a lot of great players in the league (more than all of the Spurs except Duncan) and he’s not a well-rounded player. In fact, he is one of the single worst defenders in the league. Don’t you wonder why the Wizards have the worst perimeter defense in the league right now ? (Check out 3-point percentage allowed, and number of 3-points shots given up per game this season). He’s not a franchise player, and is not a leader. He is just an excellent scorer. He’s getting paid what he deserves, and should be working on his defense and teamwork instead of calling press conferences about demands for more money or about how he’s on the cover of some video game. How many times do the Wiz have to make huge money, long-term offers to overrated one-dimensional players before they figure it out? (Juwan Howard, Rod Strickland, Kwame Brown, and half of Mitch Richmond’s contract) Oh, that’s right, they haven’t won more than 45 games since before Lebron was born. Knowing Abe Polin, they just might lock up that gauranteed mediocrity for another six to seven years….

evan // Jun 12, 2007 at 12:24 pm

How can Gilbert be that greedy averaging 6 assists in a game. It may not sound like that much to you, but that’s pretty hard while also averaging 28.4 points a game. So your calling Gilbert Arenas the greediest player, destroying the Wizards, when he is 18th in THE LEAGUE for assists (that aint too shabby) and 3rd in THE LEAGUE for points, behind Carmello Anthony and Kobe Bryant. As for the defensive problem, HE’S A POINT GAURD!!! He’s not supposed to be getting the blocks! It’s Brenda “the Hair Dresser” Haywood’s fault that the defense sucks. But if you really think Gil’s numbers blow, he is 5th in steals per game among gaurds with 1.88 (Tony Parker is only getting 1.06, number 44 among gaurds, and only has 5.5 assists per game, 21st in the league). So I really would rethink your argument if I were you Spurs fan. And for the record, he looks FLY on the cover of that game!

if hes smart hes gonna leave the wiz and go somewhere where he has the potential to win a ship. If he stays its gonna prove that he doesnt care about a C-SHIP but rather scoring, franchise player and money. Go to some place like houston where you would fit right in with Mcgrady, Yao, and scola, you’ll get your c-ship there.
