Gilbert Arenas is Chocolate Rain

As you all know, Tay Zonday’s hit Chocolate Rain has been the biggest internet phenomenon of the summer. The catchy song has led to an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel, remixes, a cover by John Mayer, and an NES version of the song. As this song has grown in popularity, a question that hasn’t been asked a lot is what the chocolate rain that Zonday sings of his supposed to refer to. In this interview, he says that the lyrics are supposed deal with racism. While that certainly could be the meaning of the song, I think Tay is putting up a smokescreen as to the true intent of the song. Chocolate Rain is clearly about Gilbert Arenas. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at the lyrical evidence.

“Some stay dry and others feel the pain”

Obviously the Wizards would be the ones staying dry, while everyone else in the NBA (save Portland) would be the ones feeling the pain of Chocolate Rain. L.A. is still feeling the effects of Chocolate Flooding.

“The school books say it can’t be here again”

Translation: Gilbert will play 0 minutes at Arizona, he’ll never make it in the NBA, he’ll never be an All-Star, etc. To put it bluntly, the school books are wrong.

“Build a tent and say the world is dry”

The action of Gilbert Arenas haters when confronted with the overwhelming evidence supporting his on-court excellence. Sometimes it’s just easier for some people to live in their own little bubble (or tent in this case) of denial.

“Only in the past is what they say”

Do you think Gilbert has noticed everyone saying that the Wizards might not make the playoffs this year despite the fact they’ve made it the last 3 years?

“Raised your neighborhood insurance rates”

Would you want to live in a neighborhood subject to damage from Chocolate Rainstorms? And people wonder why no one lives near the Verizon Center.

“Made you turn your head the other way”

The collective action of Utah Jazz fans when they see this.

“History quickly crashing through your veins”

Who set the record for most points scored in a game while playing less than 30 minutes? Who set the record for most points scored in overtime? You guessed it, Gilbert.

“Dirty secrets of economy”

How Ernie Grunfeld plans to re-sign Gilbert next off-season.

“Angels cry and shake their heads in shame”

A secondhand account of what it’s like to cover Gilbert Arenas one-on-one.

After a close look at the lyrics, it’s evident that Tay Zonday wrote Chocolate Rain as a tribute to Gilbert Arenas. The only thing that would make it any more obvious would be if Tay came out and said “My song was phenomenal” or shouted “Hibachi!” at the end of the song.
