Gilbert Stops at 50000 Shots, Gil 20 Names, and another Contest

Posted by gilbertology on August 28th, 2007

Gilbert’s updated his blog and he has a lot to say including a new contest, the Adidas Gil 20’s, 100,000 Shots in 73 days update, and a chocolate rain plug!

On his contest:

I’m giving three lucky fans the chance to win a Spalding court. They get the rim, the backboard, Spalding balls, and all the rest of the accessories. All you have to do is submit an essay on GilsArena.com on why you are the one that needs or deserves the court. I’ll have the contest running now until October 1st.

A Gil 20 update:

They’re called the Gil 20’s. That means that there are 20 different versions coming out in 20 cities. That means what whatever version you buy in D.C., you can’t buy in L.A. Or whatever comes out in L.A., you can’t get in Miami.

Some names for some of them that are coming out include ‘Black President’, ‘Agent Zero’, ‘Hibachi’, ‘Coke Zero’, and ‘Don’t Watch Me, Watch TV’.

But there is something bigger in the works:

This isn’t the big thing that I was talking about, that’s happening in a couple more weeks. That’s going to be huge.

He also gives an update on his 100,000 shots in 73 days quest:

I stopped my shots at 50,000. I’m not going for 100,000 anymore. I did 50,000 in 26 days. What happened was I sat out a couple days and that turned into a whole week because my arm was sore.

And even wants a Chocolate Rain theme song:

Somebody made a mix of my highlights to Chocolate Rain. You have to see it. I love that song. I want Tay to make me a theme song.

Much more good stuff on his blog

Gilbert is a Cornerstone

Posted by JakeTheSnake on August 28th, 2007

Over at FanHouse, Tom Ziller pegs Gilbert Arenas as the 7th best player to build a franchise around, beating out such other players as Dwight Howard and Chris Paul and finishing right behind Steve Nash. Here’s his reasoning behind Gilbert’s placement:

There are more well-rounded players out there, but as long as games are still won by putting up more points than the other team, dynamic scorers like Gilbert Arenas will always have a place among the NBA’s elite. Plus, he’s one of the rare athletes that loves performing not only in the spotlight but also under pressure — and you just can’t teach balls of steel. Already a favorite among the NBA underground for his infectious personality, he’s on the verge of breaking out on the national level. And besides, Agent Zero is best nickname in sports, so that has to count for something.

Make sure to check out the rest of the top 10 as well as the countdown continues.

NBA LIVE 08 Cover Athlete Gilbert Arenas to Host the NBA LIVE Summer Camp

Posted by gilbertology on August 28th, 2007

EA Sports has a press release out of their NBA LIVE Summer Camp, where players will be brought in to capture their go-to moves and paired with kids, aged 5 to 17, who would not otherwise be able to participate in organized sports due to financial barriers.

NBA LIVE 08 cover athlete Gilbert Arenas (Washington Wizards) will host the NBA LIVE Summer Camp taking place at EA Canada in Vancouver, B.C. on Wednesday, August 29. Along with Arenas, NBA stars Paul Pierce (Boston Celtics), Josh Howard (Dallas Mavericks), Monta Ellis (Golden State Warriors), Shawn Marion (Phoenix Suns) and Randy Foye (Minnesota Timberwolves) will be on hand to have their go-to moves authentically represented in NBA LIVE through motion capture.

But by far the most interesting part of the press release is that Gilbert will be bringing out the HIBACHI:

NBA LIVE Summer Camp, open to the media but not to the general public, will provide the NBA players the opportunity to get their first look at NBA LIVE 08, give feedback to the development team, and get them on the court for a little friendly competition. As an added bonus, Arenas will pull out the hibachi and grill lunch for his guests.

Gary Payton is Rude

Posted by gilbertology on August 27th, 2007

The newest issue of Dime Magazine with Greg Oden on the cover has a page where Gilbert gives 10 reasons why 2008 will be known as “The Takeover: Reloaded.”

Among the interesting tidbits, many of which, he has already shared on his NBA.com blog, he talks about the rudest thing an NBA player has ever said to him. It was Gary Payton in his rookie year in which Payton scored 16 straight points in the first couple of minutes in the game. Arenas was scared and his confidence was shattered. Then Payton said to him:

“You’re lucky I’m not an A.I. type of player. I would score 50 on you in the first half.”

Gilbert says that to this day, everytime he plays against Payton, he tries to score 35 on him in the first quarter.

Gilbert Arenas is Chocolate Rain

Posted by JakeTheSnake on August 26th, 2007

As you all know, Tay Zonday’s hit Chocolate Rain has been the biggest internet phenomenon of the summer. The catchy song has led to an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel, remixes, a cover by John Mayer, and an NES version of the song. As this song has grown in popularity, a question that hasn’t been asked a lot is what the chocolate rain that Zonday sings of his supposed to refer to. In this interview, he says that the lyrics are supposed deal with racism. While that certainly could be the meaning of the song, I think Tay is putting up a smokescreen as to the true intent of the song. Chocolate Rain is clearly about Gilbert Arenas. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at the lyrical evidence.

“Some stay dry and others feel the pain”

Obviously the Wizards would be the ones staying dry, while everyone else in the NBA (save Portland) would be the ones feeling the pain of Chocolate Rain. L.A. is still feeling the effects of Chocolate Flooding.

“The school books say it can’t be here again”

Translation: Gilbert will play 0 minutes at Arizona, he’ll never make it in the NBA, he’ll never be an All-Star, etc. To put it bluntly, the school books are wrong.

“Build a tent and say the world is dry”

The action of Gilbert Arenas haters when confronted with the overwhelming evidence supporting his on-court excellence. Sometimes it’s just easier for some people to live in their own little bubble (or tent in this case) of denial.

“Only in the past is what they say”

Do you think Gilbert has noticed everyone saying that the Wizards might not make the playoffs this year despite the fact they’ve made it the last 3 years?

“Raised your neighborhood insurance rates”

Would you want to live in a neighborhood subject to damage from Chocolate Rainstorms? And people wonder why no one lives near the Verizon Center.

“Made you turn your head the other way”

The collective action of Utah Jazz fans when they see this.

“History quickly crashing through your veins”

Who set the record for most points scored in a game while playing less than 30 minutes? Who set the record for most points scored in overtime? You guessed it, Gilbert.

“Dirty secrets of economy”

How Ernie Grunfeld plans to re-sign Gilbert next off-season.

“Angels cry and shake their heads in shame”

A secondhand account of what it’s like to cover Gilbert Arenas one-on-one.

After a close look at the lyrics, it’s evident that Tay Zonday wrote Chocolate Rain as a tribute to Gilbert Arenas. The only thing that would make it any more obvious would be if Tay came out and said “My song was phenomenal” or shouted “Hibachi!” at the end of the song.
