Basketball is a funny game sometimes. It only gets funnier when you take someone like Gilbert Arenas and throw him into the mix. Throughout his career, Gilbert’s been knows as a player who improves the offense with his scoring and passing, but he’s generally considered a defensive liability. So what happens when Gilbert gets injured and only plays 13 games on one healthy knee? It would seem to reason that the defense would become even worse and the offense wouldn’t be nearly as potent right? Well, based on the stats from 82games, that assumption is only half-correct:
As you can see, the offense was actually worse off when Gilbert was playing this season, which isn’t altogether shocking. Very few players can still be productive offensively when they aren’t 100%. The odd thing is that while the offense struggled, the defense was better when Gilbert was on the court. In fact, his defensive production actually overcame his offensive shortcomings and he still managed to have a positive net contribution for the regular season, even though he was injured and never really got to fully integrate himself in the offense. Like I said, basketball is a funny game.

Because you know why? Gilberts perimeter D is actually better than AD’s. Aas bad as a a defender gil is, AD’s actually worse. Although AD tries to play more D than Gilbert.
