Two Teams Are In The Running, But One Is Falling Further and Further Behind

Arenas Most ImprovedGilbert celebrates

If you have Gilbert’s Warriors jersey and his Wizards jersey in your collection, I have some good news: You won’t need to add another jersey to your collection this summer.  With the news that Baron Davis is signing with the Clippers, it means that the only two teams that have a realistic shot at getting Gilbert’s services next year are the two teams that he’s played with during his NBA career.

The Wizards and Warriors have both offered Gilbert a max contract, with Golden State’s contract being a 5 year deal that’s close to $100 million and Washington’s deal at 6 years and somewhere between $125-127 million dollars.  Because Washington is Gilbert’s current team, they’re the only ones that can offer him that all-important sixth year.

Even though Washington has the upper hand with the ability to offer a six-year contract, they’re not resting on that advantage in their efforts to sign Gilbert.  Wizards owner Abe Pollin told Gilbert “You’re my guy, and I won’t let you leave no matter what.”  That together with the Wizards willingness to give Gilbert the max contract looks like it should be enough to keep him in the nation’s capital.  As one person close to the situation put it:

“It’s going to happen — he’s going to be here.  The question is how much is he going to take and what impact is it going to have on us going forward? The ball is in his court now.”

While Gilbert is on his international trip, he’ll be watching to see where the NBA puts the salary cap this season and weighing his options and deciding whether or not to take the max or sign for less in the hopes that they can add another player to help towards the goal of a championship.  We’ll find out in the coming days what decision Gil makes, but for all intensive purposes, it looks like Gilbert will be with Washington for the forseeable future.
