The Door Isn’t Shut

Posted by JakeTheSnake on August 21st, 2008

I’ve tried to make my case over the last few weeks that the Redeem Team could use the services of Gilbert Arenas to no avail (You are aware that Jason Kidd has 9 points and 9 assists in Beijing, right?  That’s not a per game average, that’s his total output in Beijing.), but at least the director of USA Basketball, Jerry Colangelo won’t shut the door on another appearance by Arenas.  Here’s what he had to say in his chat with the Washington Post:

Chicago, IL: Has Gilbert Arenas burned any bridges with USA basketball, or will he be under consideration for the team in future years?

Jerry Colangelo: I’ve always stated that I’m one to give people 2nd chances and opportunities, and we’re human beings and we all make mistakes in what we say or in our actions. Gilbert was asked to join us and participate and he accepted. It didn’t work out the first time around, he was injured, but he was on the cusp of making the team. And despite some of his ill-placed remarks, which weren’t very accurate, I didn’t make a big deal of it, so he would still be under consideration.

[Note: This will be my last post for about a week or so as I go through the process of moving, so don't be alarmed if Gilbert does something crazy and I don't do a post about it right away.  Feel free to discuss anything that happens in the comments.]

Don’t Watch Gil, Watch Gil on Reality TV

Posted by JakeTheSnake on August 19th, 2008

In that radio interview that was linked to earlier, Gilbert mentioned that he was mulling over a deal to do a reality TV show.  While I’m doubting that he’ll end up pulling the trigger on the offer (just call it a gut feeling) it does stir the imagination about what a reality show with Gil would be like.  If it goes through, here’s what you could expect:

  • High ratings.
  • Merciless violence towards Nick Young and Andray Blatche.
  • Gilbert comparing something or someone to LeBron or Kobe in every episode.
  • He’ll say something that inadvertently angers another team’s fanbase at least once a week.  If it lasts for a whole season, he’ll most assuredly offend every team in the league.
  • Halo.  Lots and lots of Halo.  I’m guessing it’s the main reason why he won’t end up taking the offer.
  • A special guest appearance by Awvee Storey!
  • Several instances of Gilbert talking to strangers on the street.
  • Lots of footage of Gil at his midnight shooting sessions.
  • Marathon Halo sessions.
  • Lots of scenes where Gilbert walks by his new pool.
  • Very few scenes of Gilbert actually swimming in his pool.
  • The occasional Borat impression, which inevitably ends up sounding like Oleksiy Pecherov’s voice.
  • Lots of pranks.  Most of them directed towards Nick Young and Dominic McGuire.
  • At least one instance of Gilbert trying to change one his children’s diapers, and failing miserably.
  • Lots of rookie hazing.  Consider yourself warned, JaVale McGee.
  • Did I mention Halo?

Gilbert was a guest on Big O and Dukes show on WJFK today as part of the “Who do you know?” contest where listeners try to get a celebrity that they know call the Big O and Dukes show.  You can listen to it here.  As you would expect, Gilbert makes it interesting the whole time, talking about Halo, his new contract, how he feels about the one year college rules, and he talks about what he’d like to see done with the team’s uniforms.  He also talks about possibly doing a TV show(!) that I’ll get into more later.  Until then, enjoy his musings.

Two Links To Start Off Your Week

Trampoline Dunk

- Awful Announcing delivers even more evidence that Gilbert really could’ve been useful at the Olympics this year, even if only to help the trampoline dunkers.

- If you missed out on Gilbert Arenas’ 60 point performance against the Lakers, you can now see the entire game (well, except for the first six seconds) on Hulu.
