Gilbert was a guest on Big O and Dukes show on WJFK today as part of the “Who do you know?” contest where listeners try to get a celebrity that they know call the Big O and Dukes show.  You can listen to it here.  As you would expect, Gilbert makes it interesting the whole time, talking about Halo, his new contract, how he feels about the one year college rules, and he talks about what he’d like to see done with the team’s uniforms.  He also talks about possibly doing a TV show(!) that I’ll get into more later.  Until then, enjoy his musings.

Gilbert Enters The Jungle

Posted by JakeTheSnake on October 4th, 2007

Gilbert Arenas was interviewed on the Jim Rome show today and as always he had some interesting things to say. He definitely left an impression on Rome who posted this on his website after the interview:

I have done hundreds of radio interviews in my career. And can honestly say that I consider Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas, if not my favorite, one of my favorite current athlete interviews. Agent Zero is a fascinating guy with a different look at life. Gilbert called into the Jungle on Thursday to share some of his takes on basketball and society.

Gil told me that he is completely heeled from the knee injury that wiped out the end of his season in the spring. He hit the rehab hard this summer and says he is the same guy.

He also shared with me that he plays video games ten to twelve hours per day and that he gets about three hours a sleep every day. I’m not sure how he is a world class athlete playing in the Association on three hours per night, but that is what he said.

If you go to the website you can actually listen to the interview in its entirety if you have a subscription. If you don’t, have a subscription there’s still good news. I was able to listen to the whole thing today while driving to class (totally by chance too, I had no idea he was on) and here’s some of the highlights.

  • According to Rome, Phillies center fielder Aaron Rowand is big into the “Hibachi!” phenomenon.
  • Gilbert talked about the strike that he went on this summer after a fight with his girlfriend this summer.
  • He also explained the shark joke controversy. According to him, he was watching Ian Edwards at the time he was dictating the blog so when he repeated what he said to Dave McMenamin he didn’t know that he was just repeating the joke so it ended up being published in the blog.
  • Like Rome himself said, Gilbert said that he plays video games 10-12 hours a day and sleeps for about 3.
  • At the end of the interview Gilbert went on a rant about Mark Ecko putting asterisk on the Barry Bonds ball that put the segment way over.

I’m sure there’s more I’m forgetting (it’s kind of hard to take notes while driving) but it was a hilarious interview. If you have a subscription and you can listen to it, I highly encourage it.

Gilbert Arenas interview with Coach John Thompson

Posted by gilbertology on January 10th, 2007

Thanks to HoopsPerspectives.com who pointed out that Gilbert was interviewed on Sports Talk 980 for the John Thompson Show. Gilbert talks about his party, the Wizards, “the takeover”, “Hibachi”, his altitude chamber among many other things.

One of the most interesting parts of the interview is that the story about flipping a coin to determine between the Wizards and Clippers was made up just to be funny and for entertainment. He chose the Wizards because he kept hearing that he was a west coast kid and didn’t want to go East and he didn’t want to deal with the distractions in his hometown with friends and ticket requests.

Other tidbits:
- Didn’t touch a basketball until he was 12
- Doesn’t allow people over his house because all they want to see is the chamber
- Favorite player when growing up was Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, and once grown up - Penny Hardaway
- Has a son on the way

You can listen to the entire 2 part interview here.
