Game 4: 2 for 3 Isn’t Bad, Unless…

Posted by JakeTheSnake on November 9th, 2007

Another sub-par game for Arenas against the Nets on Thursday night. Gil went for 21 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and hit his first two three pointers as well as a buzzer beater to end the half, to go along with his first buzzer beater of the day. He had a chance to tie it or win it in the closing seconds but dribbled into a double team and ended getting his shot blocked. As Arenas put it to Washington Post’s Ivan Carter:

“I was going for the winner. I was going to take the three-pointer for the win but when I made my initial move to my left, I should have just stayed left and gone to the basket. Instead, I went right and they forced me baseline. I knew Vince was coming and he blocked the shot.”

As you can see in the picture, Arenas was wearing a sleeve on his leg to keep it warm after having his knee drained Wednesday. The news got worse after the game when he told reporters that he was considering getting an MRI on his knee and asking coach Eddie Jordan to cut his minutes. Arenas won’t have much time to decide because the Wizards face off against the Nuggets tonight. So far he’s averaged around 40 minutes per game, if that goes down tonight we’ll know what his decision was.

Game 3: Javierology

Posted by JakeTheSnake on November 3rd, 2007

You know it’s a weird day when Gilbert isn’t the best Arenas in the world of sports. Gilbert’s cousin, Javier, returned a punt 61 yards for a touchdown which gave the Alabama Crimson Tide the lead over #3 Louisiana State. Unfortunately, that would be Alabama’s last score as LSU came back to win 41-34.

For some reason, I get the feeling that’s not what you came to read about, so onto Gilbert’s performance against the Magic tonight. Like the rest of the Wizards (save oddly enough, Brendan Haywood) it was another disappointing game. After connecting on his first three shots, Arenas went 2-12 from the field and missed all 4 of his three-point attempts.  On the bright side, Arenas has his best night distributing the ball as he dished out 6 assists but it wasn’t enough as the Orlando came out on top in the battle of Harry Potter (Magic vs. Wizards…get it?  Anyone?  Hey, is this thing on?  Hello?).

The Wizards next game isn’t until Thursday so let’s hope that the Wizards can use these days to get their swag back.

Game 2: No One Will Ever Accuse Gil of Being Joe Namath

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, sometimes a picture says it all:

Obviously, tonight wasn’t Gilbert’s best game. If it hadn’t been for his ability to get to the foul line, it would’ve been much worse. Arenas went a mere 5 of 20 from the field and missed all 5 of his three-pointers. So for those of you keeping score at home, that means the only three-pointer he’s hit this season was the one that forced overtime against Indiana.

With that said, the panic button isn’t being hit yet. Sometimes, the Hibachi just needs a little home cookin’.

Game 1: The Late Game Swag is Back

Posted by JakeTheSnake on November 1st, 2007

I told you about it before, now without further ado, here’s Gilbert’s shot that sent the game into overtime:

Sadly, it would be in vein as the Pacers finished the job in overtime winning 119-110. Gilbert had a solid game with 34 points, 3 assists, and 8 rebounds but struggled from the field going 10 for 25, 13 of 19 at the free throw line, and the only 3 pointer he made was the one I just showed you.But I’m all about optimism so I’ll close with what some other people had to say about Gilbert’s game-tying shot.

Awful Announcing (who provided the video):

Yeah Yeah Yeah. The Wizards lost in overtime, but after the injury plagued 2nd half of the season last year I just happy to see Gilbert back doing what he does best. Hitting Daggers….

Matt Watson of AOL FanHouse:

Before you try to rain on my parade and point out that the Wiz went on to lose this game in overtime, I’ll tell you that I just don’t care: seeing one of the game’s biggest stars step up and deflate an entire arena is always enjoyable. The NBA: Where ‘STFU, You Know I’m Making This’ Happens

Washington Post’s Ivan Carter:

It was a few minutes after Gilbert Arenas hit that game-tying three-pointer to force overtime that he was getting ready to take the floor for OT and was stretching out his legs on the scorer’s table. I was sitting under the basket, right next the end of the Wiz bench furiously reworking my story after the shot when I looked up. Arenas looked at me, smiled and winked. It was a telling moment.

Dime Magazine:

Did we say it would take a while for Gilbert Arenas to get his rhythm back? Opening Night for the guy, and he’€™s already in midseason form, sticking a trey at the buzzer to force OT against the Pacers. Arenas had Jamaal Tinsley stuck to him like cheap soda residue on the last possession, but fought him off and hit a step-back jimmy. It didn’t matter that Gil (34 pts) had been 0-for-6 beyond the arc before that; there was no way anyone else was taking that shot
